Parable of Two Sons

There was once a father who had two sons who he loved very much. He fed them, clothed them and paid for all their needs until they were both grown up.

One day, the father as he was slowly becoming advanced in years, decided to go into business. He used his savings and borrowed from lenders. When more funding was required, he borrowed some money from his two sons as well.

Unfortunately the business failed. But the debts still needed to be paid. Eventually the father paid of all his debts.

However, the eldest son believes that the father should pay interest for the amount owed.

Should the father pay the eldest son as requested
Should it depend on any terms that the father and eldest son had discussed prior
Should the youngest son pay the eldest son the amount owed
Or are there any other alternatives?

  1. There is no such thing as who owes who in a Family. I wont even ask for a penny. However if i had extra cash i dont mind starting some business wif him together.. but of course under my supervision cough* cough* :p well… at the end of the day he is still my Dad rite? 😉

  2. @wsg: true that with family & loved ones, we should not let a material object become an obstruction to love. oh, what sort of biz would u go in with ur dad? ^^

    @sandy: agreed fully to that. mmm…

    @cybercelt: hmm. if the father was in need of money, and the eldest son was not in need?

    that would be best actually

    ps. we are talking about a hypothetical situation here in case anyone was wondering 😉

  3. There is no such thing as who owes who in the family especially if we are talking about the nuclear family. They are the closest we’ve got – the next of kin. Okay, maybe some people would say business is business and relation is relation but I don’t think it’s ethical to ask your own father to pay the interests especially when he had taken care of them both; clothed, fed and educated them. Gratitude and appreciation is what we need to have.

  4. Our parents spend so much on us from the day we came into this world. Should we not with pleasure help them or contribute to them whenever needed? No I dont believe that we as children should request / demand for any money given to our parents let alone with interest!

  5. Should the father request that his son pays back all the monies spent on raising him?

    We shouldn’t be so petty about issues such as these. Instead of being on the side of the debt collectors and critics, the son should aid the father in his most difficult of times.

  6. omg… the dad must so sad… terrible son he has! somemore ask for interest… if i was the father, i would probably tell my son, “hey son, could you pay me back for all the $$ spent on ur life, education… blah blah blah”… hope the son realises… hahaha…

  7. @storyteller: Thanks for stopping by with your thoughts =)

    @RJ: well said with exclamations!!

    @elton: *nods yes*

    @ppl: true. but quite funny/disbelieving how somethings turn out sometimes in life.

    @babyangel: definitely very sad. hmm. definitely pray & hope that the child realizes in the end.
